In a few years’ time, will we be calling en masse via hologram telephony? The Spanish telecom company Telefonica is aiming for a breakthrough around 2026. The technology is already there, but not everyone has the expensive VR glasses required for it.

Slovak software company Matsuko, which works with several telecom companies, announced on Tuesday that it is launching a hologram telephony service for companies where the 3D experience has been significantly improved.

What is special is that from now on several people can participate in group conversations as a 3D hologram. It is also possible to position the group around a virtual model, for example of a house or a machine. This opens up possibilities for engineers, designers and architects, for example.

Artificial intelligence is involved, allowing participants to see each other in 3D without VR glasses, while wearing the 3D glasses. The technology makes the glasses disappear, allowing the conversation partners to have eye contact. For this purpose, images of the face must be taken in advance.

The telecom sector has great expectations about the new way of communicating. “It becomes more natural,” says Telefonica developer David Moro. The 3D display brings the conversation partners closer together, it says. “The better they can show their emotions, the better the communication.”
