chaseA speed devil had a lot of fun on the road in The Hague on Saturday evening. The driver sped through the Victory Boogie Woogie tunnel while turning on his high beams at more than 170 kilometers per hour. What he didn’t know: The driver passed an unmarked police vehicle, of all things. He lost his license and his car.
On Saturday evening, officers from the Central Police Unit in The Hague drove along the Rotterdamsebaan in a discreet police vehicle. They seemed surprised when a passenger car passed by at “enormous” speed. The maximum speed allowed in the tunnel is “only” 70 kilometers per hour.
The driver was clearly in a hurry and made it clear by “frequently turning on his high beams,” police said. The officers chased him and tried to catch up with the hit-and-run driver, but it wasn’t so easy. The speed rose to 170 kilometers per hour and even at that speed they did not get close.
Loss of driving license and car
The “inconspicuous” officers then decided to call in more units. Shortly afterwards the regular and flashy police cars also joined the chase. The driver received a stop sign and parked his car neatly on the side of the road. He was then immediately allowed to return his license because he was driving more than 100 kilometers per hour faster than permitted. He also lost his car: the police confiscated it.
According to police, the driver “thought it was all very unfair.” He had recently gotten his license back after losing it due to speeding. Now the man can expect another warning, both for speed and for the use of high beams. After that a traffic officer will make a decision on the case, driver’s license and car.

Discreet radar cars
Since the beginning of 2022, police have made greater efforts to crack down on motorists exceeding the speed limit. Since then the police have been regularly operating fifty to one hundred “inconspicuous radar cars” on motorways and provincial roads.
Cars can monitor and fine traffic speeds in both directions without stopping a driver. “If a violation is detected, a photo of the car’s license plate is taken,” Egbert-Jan van Hasselt, outgoing project head of infrastructure at the National Police, said previously.
According to the police commissioner “there have still been too many deaths due to blinders and other traffic criminals”. At the time this was reason enough for the police to launch a new offensive. “The behavior of people in traffic is actually a reflection of the behavior in society. And if corrective action is not taken, things will go wrong. I also see tolerance decreasing, because you hardly meet the ‘gentleman in traffic’ anymore. I’m just I, I, I.”
The police had previously conducted a successful experiment with speed cameras in inconspicuous police cars. “We’re better at getting speeding tickets. We must not stop hit-and-run drivers; Just as in the case of speed cameras and speed checks, they will receive the fine directly at home,” explained the police commissioner.
