Hidden Dead City with 300 Tombs Containing Mummies Discovered

CAIRO – Scientists have discovered mass burial with more than 300 tombs in Egypt which they call the new ‘City of the Dead’.

The city of Aswan was an important trading, mining and military zone when it was first founded more than 4,500 years ago – but the lives of its people have long remained a mystery.

The team has been working at the site for five years and recently discovered 36 tombs dating back 900 years and each containing 30 to 40 mummies – and many of them contained relatives who likely died of infectious disease.

The discovery is one of the largest of its kind in Egypt and provides new insights into life and death in ancient times.

Scientists hope to learn more about the Aswan people and how they lived and died.
