Causes fire and mass evacuation

A helicopter crashed into the roof of a Hilton hotel in northeast Australiacausing a fire in the building and forcing a mass evacuation.

Shattered pieces of the helicopter’s propeller fell into the hotel’s swimming pool, an emergency services official said, adding that one man was treated at the scene for life-threatening injuries.

Emergency crews were called at around 2 a.m. on Monday (1600 GMT Sunday) after the accident at the Hilton’s Double Tree Hotel in the northern city of Cairns, considered the gateway to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, media reported.

“The building was evacuated as a precaution and there were no injuries to those on the ground. Police are on the scene investigating the circumstances of the incident.”Queensland state police said in a statement.

Police did not specify the condition of the pilot or whether there were any passengers on board, but a video posted on social media showed a fire on the roof of the hotel.
