Thorsten Fink entered the press room with his head held high after STVV’s first home defeat since October 8. “I cannot blame my team,” said the German coach.

“We played a good game, both in the first and second half,” Fink analyzed. “In the second half, Ghent dropped back deeply and we found it difficult to find openings. However, we still had two big chances that we could not take advantage of, just like the penalty in the first half. Ghent did capitalize on their chances, perhaps that has to do with their experience.”

The gap with AA Gent is nine points after this defeat. That means virtually game over for the Canaries to qualify for seventh place. “Now we are going all out for eighth place,” said Fink. “That is more realistic for this club. This could be a great goal for us in the coming weeks.”

Vanhaezebrouck full of praise for Fink

Fink’s colleague, Hein Vanhaezebrouck, for once did not criticize the Truiense artificial grass, but praised his colleague in the other dugout: “We always speak of the champion and the cup winner, but sometimes you also have to look at the teams who do not play at the top but who simply play very good football. What STVV has done this season is one of the most beautiful things we have seen in our competition. That’s thanks to my colleague, I’m a fan of his.”
