Online training prepares patients for successful doctor consultations

The modern healthcare system not only offers patients opportunities for help, but also represents a burden for many. Despite the vulnerable situation of a personal illness, patients are required to deal with applications, conduct negotiations, make decisions about the best form of therapy or understand medical discussions. To be able to master all of this, a good dose of self-confidence is often required. In this online module, you will learn how patients can strengthen themselves to do this.

Prof.in Dr.in Renate Tewes

Vienna (OTS) Confidently ask the right questions even in difficult situations: people who are weakened by an illness or diagnosis face the challenge of asserting themselves confidently in doctor’s appointments despite their stress. The freely available online course “Confident appearance as a patient” from the health platform selpers trains those affected how to express needs, criticism or questions clearly and forcefully.

The importance of clear language becomes particularly clear when you sit across from a doctor as a patient. Even naming body parts can lead to misunderstandings, as a large-scale study by the Max Planck Institute recently found: human bodies may be structured the same, but how we name body parts differs due to universal and cultural factors.

The online course “Confident appearance as a patient” shows how to formulate your own health concerns in an understandable way and avoid any misunderstandings by asking specific questions. The training was developed by selpers and Prof. Dr. Renate Tewes, a qualified psychologist, trained nurse and nursing scientist from Dresden. Since its inception, the course has established itself as a popular educational classic for patients and their relatives. In addition to tips on how to find the right choice of words and use your voice clearly, those affected learn how to achieve a self-confident appearance overall.

More competence for your own health

Prof. Dr. Tewes has been committed for years to helping patients strengthen their health literacy: “The modern healthcare system not only offers patients opportunities for help, but also represents a burden for many.
