Due to the increase in cases of acute neurological diseasesuspected of Guillain-Barréthe Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS) and the Guatemalan Social Security Institute (IGSS) issued a series of recommendations aimed at maintaining hygiene measures and the correct cooking of food.
According to authorities, cases occur one or two weeks after suffering from fever, diarrhea or respiratory problems.
The samples analyzed from some patients showed bacteria that can affect the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, emphasis was placed on the following measures focused on prevention:
- Wash your hands properly.
- Cook food well.
- Require vendors to show their health and food handling card.
- Avoid contact between raw and cooked foods.
- Consume herbal or chlorinated water.
- Consume pasteurized milk.
- Maintain hydration.

Analysis of water in follow-up of cases of neurological disease
The analyzes carried out on the water as part of the search for factors triggering the outbreak of neurological disease have been able to establish the existence of coliform bacteria, shigella and others that are normally present in fecal matter.
According to the MSPAS, this contamination of the vital liquid could be causing gastrointestinal diseases that, preliminarily, have been known to occur before the symptoms of the neurological disease appear.

Regarding infections, it was indicated that they can be acquired not only through water, but also through poorly handled food or environmental causes, issues that continue to be analyzed.
The authorities have reiterated that this disease does not spread from person to person and that the elements to which they are exposed would be the way in which the conditions that give rise to Guillain-Barré symptoms arise.
