The British newspaper “The Sun” reported on Wednesday that Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo received compensation worth 278,000 pounds sterling (equivalent to approximately 335,000 dollars) in the “false rape” case.
An American judge ordered Catherine Mayorga’s lawyer, Leslie Stovall, to hand over the amount to the Portuguese star personally.
Mayorga had accused Ronaldo of raping her in a hotel room in Las Vegas in 2009, saying that she had received $375,000 from the player at the time, in exchange for her silence.
Ronaldo did not deny having a relationship with Mayorga, but he confirmed that the matter was “consensual,” while his legal team stressed in previous sessions that “a confidentiality agreement prevents both sides from talking about the incident.”
In the last session, the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus striker and current Saudi Al-Nassr (38 years old) claimed that he was subjected to “negative bias” on the part of the prosecution, throughout the long chapters of the case, according to what “The Sun” reported.
* Bad intentions
The court ruling said that Ronaldo incurred a lot of the fees and money spent in the lawsuit due to the “bad faith” of the prosecution lawyer.
The judge blamed the plaintiff’s lawyer for “contaminating the case” and resorting to documents that could not be taken due to the secrecy and privacy laws associated with them.
Mayorga’s allegations were based on dubious foundations, and Ronaldo bears part of the blame for this long-running affair.
It is worth noting that last June, the judge in the US District Court in Las Vegas, Jennifer Dorsey, dismissed the case and punished the plaintiff’s lawyer for “bad faith behavior” and the use of “unknown” confidential documents.
Mayorga continued her fight to obtain the compensation that Ronaldo demanded to pay, amounting to about 64 million dollars, after her legal team reignited the case by filing an appeal.
She allegedly signed the agreement under which she received $375,000 in exchange for silence, “under duress.”
