International Olympic Committee ( IOC ) has denied the Algerian boxer’s allegations Imane Khelif who competes in the women’s boxing event at the 2024 Paris Olympics as a transgender. However, Imane Khelif’s sparring opponent made a surprising statement.
Quoted Daily Mail, A former Bulgarian-Nigerian sparring opponent of Imane, Joana Nwamerue, called Imane Khelif ‘a man’ and explained how during a sparring session last February, she witnessed ‘a man’s strength and a man’s technique’ from the champion. Olympic the.
“Khelif has internal problems. But he is a man. I will stick to my statement until he undergoes a test to prove to the world that he is a woman. But we all know that will not happen,” Nwamerue was quoted as saying by Reduxx. Daily Mail.
“I think we did 3-4 sparring sessions. I have the notes of everything. I can confirm that for me, he is a man. Man’s power. Man’s technique, everything,” he added.
Nwamerue claims that he was told by Khelif’s coaching team that Khelif is not a man. Nwamerue continued by quoting Khelif’s coaching team, she is a woman who only lives in the mountains with her relatives and parents so there may be changes in her testosterone or chromosomes and the like.
Khelif was born female and is not transgender. Last year, he was banned from competing after the International Boxing Association (IBA) conducted medical tests that showed he had high levels of testosterone in his body.
Khelif had previously competed without issue and was only disqualified by the sport’s governing body after she defeated Russian boxer Azalia Amineva in a 2023 tournament. The IBA is controlled by Russian Umar Kremlev and has made Russian state-owned energy supplier Gazprom its main sponsor and moved much of the governing body’s operations to Russia.
His coach, Georges Cazorla, confirmed that tests showed a ‘hormonal problem’ and a ‘chromosomal problem’, indicating that Khelif may have the XY chromosomes that are normally present in males.
“This young girl was devastated. It was devastating to suddenly find out that maybe she wasn’t a girl,” Cazorla told French magazine Le Point.
The debate over Khelif’s participation during the Olympics has not gone unnoticed by the athlete himself, who broke down in tears after winning his quarter-final match and responded to his critics after the gold medal was placed around his neck.
“For eight years, this was my dream, and now I am an Olympic champion and a gold medalist,” Khelif said on Friday.
“I am fully qualified to participate in this competition. I am a woman like any other woman. I was born a woman, I live as a woman, and I am qualified.”
