A decade ago a freeway in Germany was abandoned and not a single car has driven on it since. The “haunted” road is 17.6 kilometers long and has never been used!
This is the German A4 motorway, a section of which was built in 2014 with the intention of opening it up to traffic, however, the decision to expand a neighboring mine quickly changed the plans so that the newly built road was never used.
Rather than hand over to traffic, the stretch of highway was left to its own devices and the elements, which took it upon themselves to restore order and regain lost ground. The only thing that changed was the removal of the road markings and the creation of a small solar park with 750 kW photovoltaic panels.
Even a road bridge, which was built along the 17.6 kilometer stretch, was left unclaimed, not unjustly claiming the title of haunted.
Given that the operation of the mine will not end until 2040, the possibility that the 17.6 kilometers of the A4 of the German Autobahn will join the country’s road network is considered unlikely.
At this point it is worth mentioning that after the end of the mine operation, the area where the mining has been carried out is going to be flooded with water and create the second largest lake in Germany, after Lake Constance, which is located on the border with Liechtenstein and occupies 536 square kilometers.
