Lewis Hamiltoncurrent Mercedes driver and seven-time Formula 1 world champion, revealed in an interview with GQ magazine that he felt robbed by the way he lost the title to Max Verstappen in 2021 in that dramatic finale in Abu Dhabi.
To the direct question “were you robbed?”, Hamilton responded to the publication that he felt that way, but also described that moment as the day that has hurt him the most in his career as an athlete.
“Obviously (they robbed me). But I think the beautiful thing about that moment was that my dad was with me. Together we had lived a roller coaster, with ups and downs all our lives. And the day he hurt me the most, he was with me, he taught me to get up, to keep my head up, always,” he told the publication.
In that race, Hamilton was at the mercy of the Red Bull of Verstappen for a restart of one last lap. Michael Masi, who was the race director at the time in F1, allowed a small group of lapped cars to overtake the safety car to recover the lap, this against the regulations. The move allowed the Dutchman to get behind the Briton before the restart, but also with a fresh set of soft tires while the Mercedes driver was wearing used rubber.
The future pilot of Ferrari He added that he still feels pain about it. “If I see any fragment of it (the race), I still feel it. But I am now at peace.”

Since that moment the situation has not been ideal for the Briton who has not won a race since Saudi Arabia 2021 and noted that at first it was difficult for him to assimilate this.
“My fans have remained absolutely loyal. At first I didn’t understand it, because I wasn’t earning anything. But I have realized that it is not easy to identify with someone who always finishes first.”
