Gum Diseases Threaten Heart Health

ORAL and Dental Health Specialist Ekin Gökmen Akmansu said, “Although gum diseases are perceived only as an intra-oral problem by most people, scientific studies reveal that it is a much more comprehensive health problem. Gum diseases that are left untreated for a long time can cause systemic consequences that can also have negative effects on the cardiovascular system.”

Akmansu said, “Periodontal disease is a chronic infectious disease that progresses with gum bleeding, redness, swelling and, in later stages, dissolution of the bone that holds the teeth. During this infection that develops in the mouth, some harmful bacteria and inflammatory substances may enter the bloodstream. It is known that these microorganisms entering the circulation can cause damage to the vascular walls, leading to arteriosclerosis. Research shows that gum diseases may be associated with 3 important health problems. However, gum infections are considered an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases,” he said.

Stating that tartar cleaning does not directly cure heart diseases, Akmansu said, “However, it reduces the bacterial load and inflammation in the mouth and reduces the general inflammation level in the body.
