Guatemala interoceanic corridor launches tokenization in El Salvador

El Salvador continues to stand out in the region for its good strategy of prevention and control of the borer in cattle (GBG). According to the Epidemiological Bulletin of the Regional International Agricultural Agricultural Organization (OIRSA), corresponding to week 33 (from August 10 to 16, 2025), the country reports only 3.64% (4,131) of cases of the regional total (113,391), positioning itself as one of the countries with the lowest incidence from Panama to Mexico.

The first place in accumulated cases is occupied by Panama with 46.85% (53,125), then Costa Rica is with 21.95% (24,896), Nicaragua is in third place with 18.70% (21,212), followed by Mexico with 4.56% (5,178).

The low incidence in the country is thanks to the coordinated effort between the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), the Ministry of Health, the Center for Agricultural and Forestry Technology (CENTA), the National School of Agriculture (ENA), international organizations and, especially, the commitment of the agricultural sector and the population.

The strategy includes prevention, immediate attention of suspicious cases, application of larvicidal treatments and field monitoring. Among the products that MAG technicians apply to deal with cases are cippermetrine (fast -acting insecticide), giabus violet (antiseptic and healing) and pine and citronela oil (natural repellent).

The MAG has installed livestock inspection points in La Unión, Morazán and Usulután. He also leads a national deworming campaign, benefiting 51,000 animals from May 30 to August 14.

To this is added an intense educational campaign with distribution of teaching materials and training, benefiting to date 1,846 people in rural communities, livestock, agroservicios and veterinary clinics.

The departments with the highest incidence are: San Salvador (1,089), Morazán (592), La Libertad (571), San Miguel (472), while, those of lower incidence are Ahuachapán (34) and Cabañas (29).

Due to the previous data, the prevention and containment actions developed 1,358 in San Miguel, 793 in freedom and the rest in the other departments.

To strengthen the national response, the Government has allocated $ 700,000 of the General Fund, $ 146,335 of the Extraordinary Regional Fund of the OIRSA and $ 353,350 from the USDA for epidemiological surveillance (July 2024 – July 2025).

The population must continue with animal care measures and report any suspicious case to Call Center 912, available for complaints and requests for technical assistance.
