Various international media, such as The nation from Costa Rica and 20Minutos From Spain, they reported on the new provisions of President Nayib Bukele in Salvadoran educational centers, aimed at preventing them from becoming gang recruitment spaces, as happened in previous sand and FMLN governments.
According to the Spanish publication, Bukele defends school discipline as a “shield against gangs in El Salvador.” The notes highlight that these measures were implemented after the appointment of the Minister of Education, Karla Trigueros, and include the review of uniforms, personal hygiene, hair cut and a compulsory respectful greeting when entering classes, supervised by the directors of each school.
The regulation also establishes sanctions for breaches, ranging from cumulative demerit to the suspension of the school year or certain privileges, and will enter into force on September 1, according to 20Minutos.
For its part, The nation He points out that since August 20 the students must present short, clean uniform and shoes polish, which some magisterial guilds have described as a “militarization” of the 5,100 public schools in the country.
In social networks and media such as Univisión, it was also recalled that in previous years exclusive schools were proposed for gang members, an approach linked to the sand policy and figures such as René Portillo Cuadra, convicted with Norman Quijano for offering benefits to gangs in exchange for electoral support.
President Bukele, in his X account, defended the measures and assured that they seek to prevent the educational centers from becoming places of recruitment of gang members, while ironizing about the criticisms of the opposition pointing out that “everything is changing” in the Salvadoran educational system.
