President Nayib Bukele launched the new NATIONAL MARKET DIRECTORSduring the inauguration of the modern San Miguelito market, in San Salvador Centro.
The president said that the institution “will break with the past” and guarantee planning, clear norms, control and legal support in the country’s markets. “For merchants this changes everything (…) they will no longer be alone, they will now have an institution that watches for their rights,” he said.




The new San Miguelito market, built after the 2021 fire with an investment of $ 34 millionhas 1,040 stalls distributed in four levels, fire security systems, stairs, elevators and an area of 7,500 square meters. In addition, it includes a Early Childhood Care Center (CAPI) and a breastfeeding room, as part of the initiatives of the First Lady, Gabriela de Bukele.
Bukele stressed that the lease rate for merchants will remain the same, although now they will have a “modern, safe and dignified” space. He also announced that each tenant will have a formal contract and sanctions regulated under the Law of Administrative Procedures.






Together with San Miguelito, the markets of Chalchuapa (Santa Ana), Tapalhuaca (La Paz), the Gastronomic Square of Monte San Juan (Cuscatlán) and Ciudad El Triunfo (Usulután) were also inaugurated.
The government confirmed that new markets are currently built in San José Guayabal, La Palma, Nueva Concepción, Concepción de Oriente and Lourdes, Colón.
