Guatemala interoceanic corridor launches tokenization in El Salvador

Deputy Ana Figueroa, of the Nueva Ideas Party, presented a proposal on Thursday to reform six articles of the Constitution of the Republic, in order to introduce deep changes in the presidential system of El Salvador. The initiative contemplates modifying articles 75, 80, 133, 152 and 154 of the constitutional text.

Among the most relevant changes is the extension of the presidential term of five to six years, as well as the elimination of the second electoral round. According to the legislator, these reforms would allow to reduce electoral costs, strengthen legal certainty and attract foreign investment, giving greater stability to the country.

Another of the main axes of the proposal is to allow indefinite presidential re -election, leaving the decision on the continuity of a president in the hands of the electorate. “We want the people to decide how long to support a president,” said Figueroa during the presentation of the document.

Likewise, the proposal includes a transitory provision to shorten the current presidential term in two years, so that it ends in 2027. This, it is intended to unify the presidential, legislative and municipal elections in a single date, thus seeking greater efficiency in the electoral calendar.

The elimination of the second presidential round is also part of the approach, establishing that the candidate who obtains the simple majority of votes will be elected, without the need to reach 50 %.

The initiative has the support of 57 deputies and was presented with a process dispensation, which will allow its speedy discussion in the legislative. If approved, these reforms would mark a reconfiguration of the Salvadoran democratic system.
