Guatemala interoceanic corridor launches tokenization in El Salvador

Thanks to the security climate achieved by the country in recent years, the Corps of Metropolitan Agents (CAM) of San Salvador Centro has begun to play a more active role in citizen prevention and education, especially in schools.

As explained by Francisco López, director of the CAM, the institution has diversified its functions beyond the surveillance and municipal protection, focusing on training and community activities. Currently, about 1,200 agents make up this force, and part of them is assigned to the care of the student population through the Community Unit.

Among the actions implemented are the visit to 31 schools to give talks about municipal ordinances, environment and sports activities, aimed at students, parents and teachers. This work seeks to strengthen the link between the CAM and citizenship, promoting values of coexistence and prevention from an early age.

“We are proud as the body of agents because we are contributing to the issue of citizen security and prevention. Today 70 % of the training of the academic staff of the staff is focused on that purpose,” said López.

The promoted activities include the organization of directed recesses, the participation of agents such as arbitrators in school sporting events, as well as the establishment of orchards in educational centers. Some elements of the CAM have already been trained as referees, and this formation is projected to other agents.

Israel Sánchez, in charge of the Community Unit, stressed that agents are preparing not only as custodians of order, but also as facilitators and educators. “The objective is for colleagues to have knowledge beyond operational work. They are now in charge of children and adults, guiding and sharing knowledge,” he said.

Sanchez also recognized the change of perception that the population has had towards the CAM, especially in areas where there were confrontations with informal merchants. “Today we enter schools with a different approach: education, sport and coexistence,” he added.

Parents have also valued this new facet of the CAM. Cecilia Fermán, mother of the Kingdom School Center of Holland in Ciudad Delgado, expressed her gratitude for the talks given. “That is a principle of knowledge for us as parents, that some do not know about the articles of the ordinance,” he said.

The CAM’s strategy is part of the effort to maintain sustainability in the country’s security levels, through preventive work with children and youth.
