The right-wing candidate Nasry Asfura, favorite of President Donald Trump, leads the presidential elections in Honduras with 40.6% of the votes according to preliminary results with more than a third of the minutes scrutinized, the electoral body indicated this Sunday.
Asfura, a 67-year-old former mayor, leads fellow right-wing candidate Salvador Nasralla by 1.8 points, according to 34.25% of the electoral records, the National Electoral Council said. The leftist candidate Rixi Moncada appears third, more than 20 points away.
He is followed by just under two points from the right-wing candidate Salvador Nasralla, 72 years old. Leftist lawyer Rixi Moncada, 60 years old and representing the ruling Libre party, appears third, more than 20 points away.
“I am very optimistic that in the next few hours (that result) will change,” said Nasralla, of the Liberal Party.
On the eve of the elections, Trump threatened to cut aid to the Central American country if Asfura, of the National Party (PN), does not win.
Moncada, who had said that he would not recognize the preliminary results, asked his followers this Sunday night in a message on
In the elections of this country with a history of fraud and coups d’état, Hondurans had to decide whether or not to renew confidence in their first leftist government or follow in the footsteps of Bolivia and Argentina, whose president Javier Milei also supported Asfura.
“Let (the winner) try to think about the country away from his own benefits and (…) have a vision beyond the country than a bag of money to loot,” Michelle Pineda, a 38-year-old merchant, told AFP.
Almost 6.5 million Hondurans were called to elect Xiomara Castro’s replacement in a single round, as well as deputies and mayors for four years. The electoral authority has not yet given a participation figure.
After a campaign with early allegations of fraud, the day took place in a “democratic environment,” according to the OAS observer mission. The United States said this Sunday it will follow the elections “closely.”
Asfura is seeking the presidency for the second time after losing in 2021 against Castro, and Nasralla for the third time.
