El Salvador achieved an important diplomatic and tourism triumph during the 26th General Assembly of UN Tourism, where Member States approved by consensus the designation of El Salvador as the official venue for World Tourism Day 2026, an unprecedented event for the country.
The Salvadoran delegation was led by the Representative of El Salvador to UN Tourism, Ms. Randa Hasfura, accompanied by Ms. Carolina Cerna, from the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR), and the Ambassador of El Salvador to Saudi Arabia, SR. Ricardo Cucalón. Their articulate and strategic participation was decisive for the adoption of this historic resolution, which highlights all the work of the Minister, Mrs. Morena Valdez, over these years.
“A recognition that symbolizes international trust”

During her speech in the Assembly, the Representative, Mrs. Randa Hasfura expressed the deep gratitude of the Salvadoran Government and underlined the importance of this designation for the global image of the country.
He added that this achievement is a product of the transformation process that El Salvador is experiencing: “This recognition represents much more than a geographical choice; it symbolizes the trust of the international community in the transformation process that El Salvador is experiencing, and in its commitment to comprehensive and innovative tourism.
El Salvador will be a global host for the first time and the Assembly highlighted the focus of the 2026 celebration: “Digital agenda and artificial intelligence to redesign tourism”, aligned with the new vision of the country aimed at innovation and modernization.

During his speech, Hasfura projected the country’s vision to the international delegates:
“Today, El Salvador is a country that inspires, that innovates and that opens its doors to the world with confidence. We have shown that it is possible to transform challenges into opportunities, strengthening the security, connectivity and quality of our tourist destinations.”
As approved, in September 2026 El Salvador will welcome the world, showing how innovation and sustainability can coexist with its cultural identity, its human warmth and its natural wealth.
“The celebration of World Tourism Day 2026 will be historic: for the first time, our country will host this important global event,” said Hasfura.
The delegation highlighted that El Salvador seeks to consolidate itself as a regional benchmark in tourism and the use of technology for tourism management:
“We hope that those who visit us will witness this process of transformation: an El Salvador that looks toward the future with hope and that projects itself as a benchmark in the region.”
During the Assembly, the Salvadoran delegation held meetings with senior representatives of UN Tourism and delegations from other regions, promoting technical cooperation, investments and future strategic alliances.
