Guatemala Interoceanic Corridor launches tokenization in El Salvador

The First Sentencing Court of San Salvador imposed a sentence of 12 years and six months in prison on José Melvin Rivera Ortega, after proving his responsibility in a case of continuous aggravated rape that occurred in a lodging in Guazapa, San Salvador Norte.

The First Sentencing Court of San Salvador found José Melvin Rivera Ortega guilty and sentenced him to 12 years and six months in prison for the crime of aggravated rape in the form of a continuing crime.

According to the investigation of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), the events occurred on December 19, 2024 in a lodging in the district of Guazapa, municipality of San Salvador Norte, where the accused took the victim under deception.

Once at the scene, Rivera Ortega threatened the victim with a knife and sexually assaulted her on several occasions, keeping her detained until the next day. The woman managed to escape and went to the Women’s Unit of the National Civil Police (PNC) of Chalatenango, where she told what happened and formalized the complaint with the support of the tax authorities.

After evaluating the evidence presented, the court determined the guilt of the defendant and, in addition to the prison sentence, sentenced him to pay $960 in civil liability.

In a similar case, on October 30, the Sixth Sentencing Court of San Salvador imposed 20 years in prison on Alexis Hernández, who was found guilty of aggravated sexual abuse against a minor in the municipality of Santo Tomás, south of San Salvador.

According to the investigation, Hernández contacted the victim through social networks, tricked her into meeting him and kept her in his home, where he sexually assaulted her for two days. The minor reported the incident after telling her mother what had happened.

Both cases reinforce the efforts of the Salvadoran judicial system to guarantee justice for victims of sexual violence and apply exemplary sanctions to aggressors.
