The presidential, legislative and municipal elections scheduled for February 28, 2027 are emerging as a key moment to determine the future of social transformations in El Salvador, noted academics Óscar Martínez Peñate, Mauricio Rodríguez and Juan Contreras.
During the elections, Salvadorans in the country and abroad will elect the president for the period 2027-2033, as well as deputies and members of municipal councils for the three-year period 2027-2030, from a wide range of candidates, including those from the opposition.
Martínez Peñate, political scientist, highlighted that the results will define the deepening of the “refoundation of the State” that began in 2019 and the consolidation of the Bukele Security Model, internationally recognized for its effectiveness against gangs and organized crime. “Citizens will have the sovereign right to decide on the re-election of President Bukele and continue with peace, security, democracy and respect for human rights,” he indicated.
According to the most recent CID Gallup poll from September, 87% of Salvadorans approve of Bukele’s management and 90% support his security policy.
Rodríguez, a sociologist, pointed out that the opposition will seek to increase its representation in the Legislative Assembly to limit the governability of the Executive and stop the changes promoted by the government. Contreras, a lawyer specializing in electoral matters, added that the opponents’ strategy will focus on winning more deputies, considering that governability is key to approving reforms, laws and the annual state budget.
Currently, Nuevas Ideas has a simple (31) and qualified majority (40) of the 60 deputies, which has allowed the monthly extension of the exception regime since March 2022 and the approval of the General State Budget 2026, which amounts to $10,555.6 million, with a historic investment of $3,886.9 million in Education, Health, Security and Defense.
The opposition, made up of ARENA, VAMOS and FMLN, seeks to repeal the emergency regime and expand its legislative presence, although experts agree that the final result will depend on the vote of the citizens, who will decide whether the transformation project led by Bukele continues.
