Guatemala Interoceanic Corridor launches tokenization in El Salvador

The Third Criminal Chamber of San Salvador ordered the capture of the former FMLN deputy, Jorge Schafik Hándal, prosecuted for the crime of ideological falsehood to the detriment of public faith, and of the Guatemalan-Israeli businessman Jimmy Jamal Sawafta Mustafa.

The court also instructed the Second Investigative Court to process a red notice before Interpol, with the aim of locating and extraditing the former legislator if he is outside the country.

The same order applies to José Gerardo Rodríguez, accused in the same process. Both defendants were declared absent by the Tenth Court of Peace of San Salvador, after not appearing at the corresponding hearing.

The Chamber’s decision responds to an appeal presented by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), after the process was conducted without precautionary measures.

According to the tax investigation, the case is related to the irregular sale of a property with four properties, of which the defendants had improperly appropriated. 50% of said property belonged to Sawafta Mustafa, but despite knowing him, Hándal carried out acts of ownership over the entire property.

The Public Ministry indicates that the former deputy, in his capacity as general manager of the financial company Tu Solidaria de RL, transferred the property rights in favor of Transportes y Motores SA de CV for a value of $500,000, on March 22, 2021, committing a falsehood that caused property damage to the affected businessman.
