Group of 20 Cuban migrants land in Florida

MADRID, Spain.- A group of at least 20 Cuban rafters arrived this Thursday, February 29, on the coast of Florida. Although they managed to make landfall, they were detained by the Border Patrol.

According to few statements by the head of the USBP in the Miami Sector, Samuel Briggs II, shared on the social network X (formerly Twitter), the Cuban migrants had arrived on US soil in a rustic boat.

It can be assumed that the Cubans will be returned in the coming days, as established by the bilateral agreement between the Government of Cuba and Washington: all migrants arriving by sea will be returned.

Also this Thursday, the United States Coast Guard returned 19 Cuban irregular migrants, thus adding 276 returnees in 22 operations from various countries in the region so far in 2024.

According to the official media Latin Press, this group had left the Island illegally by sea. The repatriation occurred through the Port of Orozco, in the province of Artemisa.

The previous week, a flight with 51 irregular Cuban migrants (46 men and five women) arrived in Havana from the United States. This was the second deportation flight of Cuban migrants in 2024 from the northern country, after 37 nationals were returned on January 25. The previous flight dated December 29, 2023, when 31 citizens of the Island who entered the United States illegally were repatriated.

This week Hialeah Mayor Esteban Bovo called on the federal government to provide more funding to the city to help serve the large number of Cuban migrants who have arrived in the last two years.

According to a report from Telemundo 51 Miami, Bovo estimates that almost 80,000 Cubans have arrived in Hialeah in the last 24 months, which represents a significant increase in the city’s population. In fact, Bovo estimates that 75% of the 420,000 Cuban migrants who have arrived in the United States in that same period have settled in South Florida.
