Vienna (OTS) – On the occasion of International ME/CFS Day on May 12th, Barbara Huemer, health spokeswoman for the Vienna Green Party, reiterated her call for a Long Covid outpatient clinic or an outpatient clinic for infection-related diseases in Vienna: “Already 55 years ago, the WHO diagnosed myalgic encephalomyelitis/ Chronic fatigue syndrome is classified as a serious neurological disease. “Nevertheless, those affected still have to fight for recognition, adequate medical care and research,” says Huemer.
“I really don’t understand what the responsible city councilor, Hacker, is still waiting for – the number of those affected who are inadequately cared for is certainly increasing. Covid-19 has dramatically worsened the situation. We finally need a specialized Long Covid outpatient clinic in Vienna or an outpatient clinic for infection-related diseases,” said Huemer. The connection to research, especially on treatment and therapy, is also urgently needed. The Ministry of Health’s planned establishment of a national reference center for post-viral diseases is an important and welcome step, said Huemer.
Among the post-viral damage, the most common symptoms are palpitations, dizziness and pain, as well as lung problems and severe fatigue. Those severely affected can hardly or not at all cope with their everyday lives, are unable to work or are even bedridden. According to MedUni Vienna estimates, up to 80,000 people in Austria are currently affected. “Reason enough for the city of Vienna to use the additional funds from financial equalization to concretely improve health care,” concluded Huemer.
