AFP – A 51-year-old woman who left her granddaughter at an airport in the US and attempted to board a flight to Honduras was apprehended by the police, according to a spokesperson for the air terminal.

The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon at the sprawling George Bush International Airport in Houston, where airline staff discovered a distressed 8-year-old girl crying and searching for her parents.

An interpreter assisted the young girl, who spoke Spanish, and she revealed that her grandmother had left her at the airport before boarding her own flight.

“He Was with His Family”

“Presumably, the girl was with her family. Apparently, the grandmother proceeded to board the flight, and according to the minor, her parents had left the airport to retrieve their daughter’s forgotten passport,” stated Augusto Bernal, the communications director for the Houston airport system, in an interview with AFP.

“The girl was left alone in the check-in lobby,” Bernal added, emphasizing that it was unclear if they were traveling together.

With the assistance of the girl, airport authorities were able to contact her parents and arrange for their reunion. It was discovered that the girl had a piece of paper with her family’s phone number.

The local media identified the grandmother as Euceda Maldonado, aged 51.

“The grandmother, who had already boarded the plane, was promptly removed from the aircraft, and airport officials detained her,” explained Bernal, noting that the plane had not yet taken off. The grandmother was subsequently placed in the custody of the Houston police.

According to the FBI, there were 365,348 reports of missing minors in the NCIC database in 2020. Similarly, in 2019, a total of 421,394 children were reported missing in the NCIC.
