Governor Mundaca sparks controversy by raising “pending” debate on the death penalty

The Governor of the Valparaíso Region, Rodrigo Mundaca, called to discuss the death penalty for certain crimes.

“When I say combat it (crime) with the utmost rigor, I believe that there are discussions that are pending and that no one wants to establish, for example, the discussion around the death penalty,” said the activist of the Defense Movement for access to the Water, Earth and Environmental Protection (Modatima) on radio Subela ante “crimes that cannot be forgiven“.

“There are crimes that today, no matter how much we apply a life sentence and no matter how much we apply the highest penalties… But when a criminal enters a family’s home, rapes the mother, rapes the children, kills the father of the family, “He appropriates the material assets of that family, but commits all these atrocities… I think we have to have that discussion,” he added.

Mundaca, who will seek reelection in October, insisted that “there is a discussion that is open and I am completely open to discussing that.”

The governor’s statements did not sit well with the deputy and regional president of the Socialist Party (PS), Nelson Venegas, who, contravening Mundaca’s thinking, stated that all political sectors must firmly reject this type of “populist” and “uncivilized” approaches. ”. For her part, the Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Carolina Tohá (PPD), stated “the evidence does not show that (the death penalty) increases security.”

The interview with Rodrigo Mundaca took place on Monday, April 22. After his publication, this Tuesday, the regional governor of Valparaíso clarified that he is not in favor of the death penalty and that his words had more to do with his support for opening the debate around this and criminal sanctions.

“What I have pointed out is a fundamental debate about security and confronting crime, and I did it without insults and disqualifications, there are those who point out that the Armed Forces should be taken to the streets, and we already know that rifles do not fire chaya, and their capacity for discernment is doubtful.”declared the governor of Valparaíso through the social network X.

“The crime and insecurity that inhabits our territories is brutal, and confronting it requires strength and means, intelligence work, reform of the penitentiary system, not mixing first-timers with finishers, and more rigorous penalties, that is the debate of background”, he stated.

The governor, who took office in 2021 with the support of the Frente Amplio, has already made the decision to re-nominate. Just last January, he called on the parties to support him institutionally and defended his critical style of the Government.
