Government regrets fatal accident of young Codelco operator

Following the fatal accident that occurred this afternoon at the Radomiro Tomic Division facilities of Codelco, which affected a 30-year-old worker who was driving an extraction truck, the Government of President Gabriel Boric communicated its deep regret and sent heartfelt condolences to the family and co-workers of Ana Rojas Farías.

“On a day as emblematic as today (8M), we mourn the loss of a mining woman. The second in our history,” commented the Minister of Mining, Aurora Williams, who is in the region to commemorate International Women’s Day.

Likewise, the Secretary of State reiterated the call to promote security as an untradeable value. “Situations such as those that today mourn Codelco’s Radomiro Tomic Division, and Chilean mining as a whole, are a call to strengthen preventive measures and permanently reinforce safety protocols that help us take care of the integrity and health of our workers. and workers,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the Mining portfolio reported that the regional team of professionals from the National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin) went to the site to begin the corresponding investigation to determine the causes of this unfortunate event.

President Boric also expressed his condolences. “It is with deep pain that I learn of the death of Ana Rojas Farías, a mining worker in the Radomiro Tomic division in Calama. To her family, her colleagues at Codelco, my sincere condolences,” he said on his X social network account.

The Minister of Labor, Jeannette Jara, did the same, who in addition to expressing her regret, stated that “this terrible news forces us to continue increasing safety measures at work sites, all investigations will be carried out.”

As reported by Codelco, according to preliminary information, the accident occurred at approximately 3:25 p.m. on March 8, when the worker was operating an extraction truck in the pit area.

The division immediately suspended activities in the area, notified the competent authorities and ordered the start of an investigation to determine the causes of this unfortunate event.
