Government promotes natural gas exploration in Madre de Dios and Cusco

The Minem is committed to new reserves to transform the energy matrix and energize the industry, agriculture and economy of the Peruvian South.

The Government promotes the exploration of new natural gas reserves between the regions of Madre de Dios and Cusco, where a potential of 30 cubic feet trillions is estimated.

This project seeks to diversify the national energy matrix, reduce costs in transport and industry, massify gas in homes and generate sustainable growth with social inclusion.

During the event PPP Americas 2025organized by the BIDMinister JOrge Montero He affirmed that the country needs a modern, competitive, efficient and socially responsible energy industry.

“The development of natural gas is key to Peru. We have a natural energy corridor between Cusco and Madre de Dios that we must value as soon as possible,” the minister emphasized.

He stressed that encouraging exploration in that area will not only attract private and public investments, but will be an engine for southern industrialization and electrification of rural areas.

The Madre de Dios Basin It has a very high energy potential still without exploiting, and the State is willing to promote alliances public-private (App) and co -financed projects to develop it.

The minister stressed that this effort will be made with environmental responsibility and respect for communities, using less invasive technologies and prioritizing sustainability in each energy intervention.

In addition, he argued that natural gas can strengthen the national petrochemical industry, especially to produce strategic fertilizers such as urea, vital for the growth of the Peruvian agricultural sector.

In parallel, the MINEM It promotes three -phase electrification in rural areas, with the aim of providing productive energy to workshops, cold chains and small agricultural engines in the field.

“Without energy there is no possible development. That is why we bet on projects that integrate the regions farthest to the economic circuit, through modern and decentralized energy infrastructure,” he said Montero.
