Government formation equation and race in Pakistan – 2024-02-10 19:57:37

Leaders of several major political parties held a meeting late on Friday night before the counting of votes in Pakistan’s general election was over. It is now clear that the meeting was held in the hope of gathering enough support to form governments at the Center and in the four provinces.

On Saturday (February 10), Pakistani media Dawn reported the news.

In a speech on Friday evening, PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif announced that he has entrusted his brother, former prime minister Shehbaz Sharif with the task of forming alliances with major political parties – PPP, MQM-P and others.

That is why Shehbaz met PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari and his son, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari at the residence of caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, a Dawn source said.

Referring to the meeting as the beginning of something big, a PPP source said, the results of the polls and the subsequent situation were discussed. It was also reported that the brief discussion was fruitful. Senior leader Aminul Haque told Dawn, later the convener of Shahbaz MQM-P Dr. Khalid also spoke to Maqbool Siddiqui. Shahbaz Sharif called him in the evening. These two will have a meeting very soon.

He said that they will hold a meeting after the victory celebration at Jinnah Ground in Azizabad on Saturday.

Before the elections, the MQM-P announced that after the elections they would support Nawaz Sharif as the prime ministerial candidate. But as PML-N’s results were not promising, MQM-P was disappointed. They are probably reconsidering the matter. Why Aminul Haque refused to comment on the previous electoral agreement with PML-N.

Meanwhile, MQM-P convener Dr. in a press conference. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui invited all independent candidates who won the election to join his party.

On the other hand, in 2014, Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) joined PTI’s sit-in program outside Parliament House. Since then the party maintained a long-standing relationship with the PTI.

Sources in both parties told Dawn that PTI-backed independent candidates must join one or the other party if they want to get majority and seats reserved for women and minorities in Parliament. In that case the group is more likely to be MWM.

Hamid Hussain of MWM has won from Kurram (NA-37) in Parachinar after defeating PPP candidate Sajid Turi. Meanwhile, MWM candidate Raja Asad Abbas won from Rawalpindi (PP-18) in Punjab province. His victory is in a position to give PTI a similar advantage in Punjab’s provincial assembly as well.

Of the 297 seats in Punjab’s provincial assembly, 66 are reserved for women and non-Muslims. By joining MWM or any other party, PTI can get 24 women seats in Punjab.

However, MWM Political Affairs Secretary Asad Naqvi said there has been no discussion with PTI leaders on this issue yet.

PTI Central Information Secretary Raof Hasan told Dawn, “The matter was discussed extensively in party meetings. However, our first priority was to form our own party.” But they did not give details about how to make this team. However, he said, a decision will be taken on the matter in the future.
