Google Wallet tests passport digitization in the United States

MADRID, (Portaltic/EP) – Google Wallet will soon incorporate new functions that will allow users to create a digital copy of their passport and save more types of public transport tickets.

Google’s digital wallet service now allows you to view and manage your saved payment methods, tickets and tickets from the web, which is joined by the mobile app for Android.

This new feature will soon be joined by a series of new functions that will be accessible first to users in the United States, such as the digitalisation of passports, which will be added to the possibility of having the identity document in this format.

Passport scanning will be tested in beta, allowing U.S. users to use the digital version of their passport stored in Wallet at a number of domestic airports, Google said on its official blog.

Google hopes that users will be able to use this digital version of their passport in the future for services that require authenticating their identity, such as retrieving an account or renting a car.

Wallet’s new features also make it easier to use public transport tickets. In the United States, it is possible to store some prepaid cards, and in Germany, public transport tickets. The latter option will soon be available in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Wallet will also automatically save tickets from Gmail booking confirmations and provide real-time updates on train status.
