President of the NOC of the Republic of Kazakhstan Gennady Golovkin spoke about Kazakhstan’s withdrawal from the International Boxing Association (IBA), Liter.kz reports with reference to Sports.kz.
According to Gennady Golovkin, the entry of the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation into World Boxing will help preserve boxing in the Olympic program.
“We, for our part, are trying to convince the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation to join World Boxing and insist on this. We will continue to push them towards this decision. But the decision is made by the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation, and it is their freedom of choice. I have no weight from a legal point of view and cannot influence the federation’s decision, they are going through their own process. Continuing court hearings only hinders the athletes. We support the athletes because we want boxing to remain in the Olympic program. At the same time, the IOC has already made a decision and published requirements and instructions, and from the IOC’s point of view, it is clear what steps need to be taken to keep boxing in the Olympic program,” Golovkin said in an interview with foreign media.
Let us recall that in 2023, the IBA (formerly AIBA) was stripped of its recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) due to its failure to implement reforms in the areas of governance, finance and ethics. Since the 2020 Games in Tokyo, boxing competitions at the Olympics have been held under the auspices of the IOC, but the committee will not be involved in organizing them at the 2028 Olympic Games.
