Global cholera outbreak deeply linked to climate change: WHO official – 2024-03-20 17:00:48

Global cholera outbreaks are deeply linked to climate change, a World Health Organization (WHO) official said. He made the announcement after a meeting of a key advisory body on immunization on Tuesday (March 19). Turkish media Anadolu Agency reported this news.

Dr Kate O’Brien, WHO Director of Immunisation, Vaccines and Biologicals. He was speaking at a press conference of WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization, known as SAJE, on Tuesday.

At the time, he said, ‘We have to recognize that cholera outbreaks are ongoing and in emergencies and conflict situations it is deeply linked to climate change. We have raised the alarm about cholera.’

He said, ‘Vaccine alone is not the first step in preventing cholera. Cholera is a disease of clean water and clean sanitation where vaccines are only a method of prevention.’

O’Brien also said the world is now facing a measles outbreak.

He said, ‘The outbreak is going on. Among these, climate change, population migration and humanitarian crises, nothing is more important now than the issues of disease prevention through vaccination.’
