The way we eat is closely linked to our life expectancy, as highlighted by the specialist. If we are 50 years old and want to improve our quality of life, sugar should no longer be part of our daily consumption. “Excessive sugar intake is one of the worst habits for achieving longevity as it causes high levels of inflammation that depress our overall health,” warns Rocco.

Diets with the highest sugar content are those based on ultra-processed foods, which can shorten lifespan. “Research has shown that high levels of sugar feed cancer cells, causing them to grow. This has negative effects such as increased risk of Alzheimer’s, heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity,” the specialist points out.
Why should we limit our sugar intake?
The impact of reducing sugar in our diet is categorical, as it can increase our lifespan by up to 10 years. This is because foods high in sugar tend to show very low nutritional values and cause inflammation in our body. The latter is a silent condition that can lead to extremely serious diseases.
When our body is in a state of chronic inflammation, the immune system that previously protected us from foreign agents in our body begins to damage the body’s own tissues, leading to the loss of multiple physiological and pathological processes. This leads to more severe conditions such as cancer, heart disease and autoimmune diseases.
Although it may seem like giving up these habits is insignificant since we have been doing them for too long, Rocco points out that it can have a great impact on our body no matter how late it is. “The body has an amazing capacity to heal and regenerate. Cutting back on sugar can improve our health and ensure longevity,” concludes the professional.
