“As many as 1 in 10 women have the potential to suffer from PCOS,” said Reproductive Endocrinology Fertility Expert Dr. Cepi Teguh Pramayadi, Sp.OG(K)FER, MARS in a media briefing event with Smart Fertility Clinic by Smart IVF at Primaya Evasari Hospital, recently.
Doctor Cepi explained that someone suffering from PCOS usually has quite a lot of egg cells in the ovaries. However, many egg cells are small and cannot leave the ovaries during the fertile period.
“Ahead of the fertile period, there is usually one representative egg cell that is large in size. When it meets sperm it will become pregnant (pregnancy). But if PCOS doesn’t come out of its shell and remains small. “So there are lots of egg cells, but they’re useless,” explained Dr. Cepi.
So, what causes PCOS which is experienced by quite a lot of women?
According to Dr. Cepi, the cause of someone suffering from PCOS is an unhealthy lifestyle. Apart from that, there is also a diet that consumes too much sugar.
“Consuming sweet foods is fine, as long as the amounts are normal. “Because consuming too much (sweet) fat can increase insulin resistance or diabetes,” explained Dr. Cepi.
“Diabetes is related to PCOS. “In patients with high insulin resistance, being overweight and obese indirectly results in poor egg cell quality and makes the egg cells small,” he continued.
Apart from food, people who are lazy or lazy to move could potentially have PCOS. For this reason, Dr. Cepi advises women to do regular physical activity.
“The more calories you expend per day, the more it can help you lose weight. “Reducing body weight by around 2-5 percent can make egg cells better,” he concluded.
