Euro 2024 hosts Germany qualified for the knockout stage of the tournament after beating Hungary 2-0 in their second Group A match.
Thus, Germany collected 6 points from two games and guaranteed a place in the round of 16 of the competition.
It is Hungary’s second defeat and they will need a must-win against Scotland on Sunday to hope for a place in the tournament’s last 16. Germany will decide the first position in a direct clash with Switzerland at the same time.
The match started at a high pace and in the first minute Roland Shalai managed to get out behind the defense of the Germans. However, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer took a few steps forward and blocked the striker’s shot with a twine.
In turn, the home team could have opened the scoring in the 11th minute, but Hungarian goalkeeper Peter Gulacci headed in Kai Havertz’s corner kick. After the corner kick, Robert Andrich sent another dangerous shot, but a defender cleared the ball.
Germany opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after a goal from youngster Jamal Musiala. Then Jamal Musiala scored after a mix-up in the penalty area.
There were serious doubts about the foul of Ilkay Gündoğan, who pushed Willy Orban, who was playing the ball, in the back of the goal. However, the referee overruled the Hungarian players’ appeals for a foul, and the referees in charge of the video replay system upheld his decision, giving Germany a 1-0 lead.
Immediately after the restart, Hungary could have equalized. Dominik Soboslay took a very dangerous free-kick but Manuel Neuer made a good save.

Substitute Leroy Sane had opportunities to make the result a classic, but failed to convert.
The clearest situation for a goal in the game for Hungary came in the 90th minute, when defender Willy Orban shot at the goal vacated by Manuel Neuer, but Kimmich cleared from the goal line. In the resulting carom, there was also a hit with the ball in Emre Can’s hand, but McKelley again did not rule in favor of the Hungarians.
Switzerland will face Scotland in the other group game. The Swiss will look to advance, while the Scots will do their best to keep their chances of progressing.
