Geneva: primary school principals needed

Management is underwater in Geneva primary schools. This is what two experts commissioned by the Department of Education found. In a report released by the “Tribune de Genève”, there is talk of “a system close to the breaking point”. According to the document, management personnel (directors, assistants, teaching coordinators and secretaries) are on average 21.66% lacking compared to the cantons of Vaud, Basel-Stadt and Aargau.

To stem the problem, specialists advise the DIP to strengthen management by 20%, at a cost of 5.3 million francs. They suggest the creation of around ten educational coordinator positions and two secretaries. To ease the burden on directors, they also recommend adding a hierarchical layer by promoting assistants to deputy director status. Head of the DIP, Anne Hiltpold believes it is too early to comment on these proposals, the future of which remains uncertain. Francesca Marchesini, president of the primary teachers’ union, is sceptical.
