Angel Geovany Guzman Gonzalez, a well-known gang member from El Salvador, was arrested sentenced to 1,420 years in prison.
This was reported by the country’s Prosecutor’s Office through its official accounts. The convicted man belonged to the Mara Salvatrucha (MS13).
Angel Guzman was charged with seven cases of homicide and 37 of extortion, reported the Attorney General of the Central American country.
The gang member was also prosecuted for “25 cases where he planned and conspired to murder people, including nine soldiers,” the Prosecutor’s Office reported.
All these sentences and crimes were accumulated, so added together they amounted to a total of 1,420 years in prison.
The Prosecutor’s Office indicated that, according to the investigations“The crimes committed by Guzmán and his structure occurred between 2018 and 2019.
“At that time, the different MS13 groups had orders to assassinate agents of the National Civil Police and prosecutors.”
The Prosecutor’s Office detailed that the main victims of extortion were transporters and market merchants who were targeted by the gang members They demanded money from them so they wouldn’t kill them.“.
Gang member had several proceedings against him
“One of the victims was asked to pay $10,000 in one installment. They did this to pay a lawyer to defend the gang members who had been arrested,” he said.
The Penal Code of El Salvador establishes sentences of between 30 and 50 years in prison for the crime of aggravated homicide.
However, the sentences for those who commit the crime crime of extortion may receive between ten to 15 years in prison.
The Prosecutor’s Office did not detail how many of the victims of murder were police officers, soldiers or prosecutors.
Nor did it specify whether the prosecuted gang members were detained during the state of emergency measure implemented in El Salvador since March 2022 to combat gangs.
In more than two years of the state of emergency, more than 80 thousand alleged gang members and people linked to these gangs have been captured.
The Government of President Nayib Bukele attributes this to a sharp drop in homicides.
In addition to gang member Guzmán, three other MS13 members were sentenced to between 400 and 500 years.
