End of the suspension of classes in public schools, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between striking teachers and the Minister of National Education.
Gain de cause
Yesterday’s signing of this memorandum of understanding taking into account the demands of union teachers, therefore led to the resumption of classes soon. The unionists of Group of Standing Educators (VMM), and the Mpanabe Manova Ifotony (MMI) collective, on strike for several weeks, will resume educational activities from Monday, November 10, 2025. The memorandum of understanding in question then seems to have satisfied the main demands of the union teachers, in particular the readjustment of chalk and housing allowances, as well as the integration into the public service of FRAM teachers, graduates of the Ecole Normale Supérieure and teachers who have followed training at the CFPRP.
This is clearly a significant concession that was made on the side of the MEN, given the cost caused by this revaluation of the situation of teachers in the face of its advanced deterioration, and has been doing so for decades. It remains to be seen whether these commitments made in the agreement will soon be translated into reality, the realization of these commitments requiring substantial financial resources. In any case, the 2026 Finance Bill does provide for an increase in chalk allowances for national education teachers and an increase in salaries, in the same way as other public officials. Teachers, major players but paradoxically poor parents of national education, feel they have finally been heard. For the rest, they will be fixed soon enough!
