From January 3rd the water levels in the rivers will rise again, the situation in Germany is still tense

NOS Nieuws•vandaag, 6.05pm

From January 3, the water levels of the main Dutch rivers will rise again. How much remains to be seen, reports Rijkswaterstaat. In Germany there are still many problems due to high water and the army has been called in for help.

Because the ground is saturated, precipitation causes high water more quickly. The water height in the Netherlands also depends on the precipitation in the countries where the rivers originate and flow. In the case of the Meuse, for example, the amount of rain that will fall on the Ardennes is important.

According to Rijkswaterstaat, our rivers are currently able to handle the excess water and safety is not at risk.

The water drops for a moment longer

After the high levels recorded in recent days, the water levels in the Rhine, Waal and IJssel will decrease in the coming days. Even if the water level is not dangerously high, here and there you can still hear some nuisances.

For example, the archive of TU Eindhoven has problems due to the high water level of the Dommel. The water drips into the archive through a bicycle storage room, a spokesperson told NOS. “It’s not like there’s a shower in an entire room, but there’s water left and right.” The spokesperson cannot yet say how extensive the damage is.

Help from the German army

In Germany in some places there are notable inconveniences. Especially in Lower Saxony, not all dams resist rising waters. This is mainly due to meltwater from the Harz Mountains and persistent rainfall. That water flows to the northern cities of Celle, which is near Bremen, and Oldenburg. According to the prime minister, a flood of this magnitude has never occurred in Lower Saxony. The state asked the army for help.

Initially the soldiers will be used mainly to strengthen the dams. In some areas of Lower Saxony it is forbidden to light fireworks on New Year’s Eve for fear of unnecessarily burdening emergency services.

As a precaution, several people in Lower Saxony left their homes. The Serengeti Park zoo in Hodenhagen, about an hour’s drive from Bremen, is also affected by the water. Parts of the site are flooded. Yesterday, among others, all the lemurs, prairie dogs and meerkats were moved. The zoo has plans for further evacuations.

Giraffes and antelopes in particular are surrounded by water. However, removing them is difficult, the zoo reports, because they must be anesthetized and it is difficult to transport them through water.
