Collaboration between ISRO and over 500 private suppliers has driven rapid progress, especially since the launch of the Indian Space Association (ISpA) in 2021 that opened the door to private sector participation.
Here are 5 of India’s top rockets that have contributed to their space journey:
1. SLV (Satellite Launch Vehicle)
A pioneering project that began in the 1970s, the SLV was a milestone in the development of India’s satellite launch technology. Despite some initial setbacks, the SLV eventually completed its mission in 1980, paving the way for future rocket developments.
2. GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle)
GSLV is a launch system that has been used in various missions since 2001. Utilizing proven components on PSLV, GSLV has launched various satellites into geosynchronous orbit, including communication and navigation satellites.
3. ASLV (Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle)
ASLV was designed to place payloads into geostationary orbit, but the program was discontinued due to funding constraints. Nevertheless, ASLV made a significant contribution to the development of Indian rocket technology.
4. PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle)
PSLV is ISRO’s flagship launch vehicle that has been used in several important missions, including the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, the Mars mission (Mangalyaan), and the Astrosat space observatory. PSLV has proven its reliability by launching hundreds of satellites from various countries.
5. Vikram-S
The rocket marks a new milestone for India as the first private rocket to successfully enter the Earth’s atmosphere. Developed by Skyroot Aerospace, Vikram-S is a testament to the potential of the private sector in driving innovation in the Indian space industry.
India’s rocket development not only demonstrates the country’s technological prowess but also reflects its ambition to become a major player in space exploration. With collaboration between the public and private sectors, India continues to strengthen its position on the global stage in space technology.
