French immigrants await Labor government in Britain – 2024-06-27 00:26:42

Migrants in the north of France are waiting for a Labor government in the UK before crossing the English Channel. Migrants are keen to move to the UK after Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer’s pledge to scrap the Rwanda scheme. Emigrants from France reached England by crossing this channel.

While talking to the British newspaper The Telegraph, several migrants said that they do not want to risk crossing the Channel to the UK until the formation of the Labor Party government in Britain is confirmed. Sir Kiara has vowed to scrap extradition plans to Rwanda ‘on day one’ after coming to power.

Most of the migrants in the Grand-Synth camp near Dunkirk knew about the Rwandan scheme and feared extradition. Although some say they will try to cross the Channel if they get the chance. Many say they are willing to go to the UK after the July 4 election.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Monday that migrants are lining up in Calais waiting for Starmer’s government to come in so they can stay.

The number of migrants crossing the Channel hit a record in the first six months of this year, despite fears of extradition to Rwanda, according to UK Home Office data. Some 12,901 people arrived in the UK this year, 17 per cent more than last year and 8 per cent more than the previous record in 2022.

In an article in The Telegraph, Home Secretary James Cleverley wrote that migrants and their traffickers are now on edge at the prospect of a Labor government guaranteeing asylum for illegal immigrants. He pointed out that the plan to send Rwanda would result in boats being intercepted and asylum claims being prevented from entering the UK.

In another article, shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said the Rwanda scheme would not work. If the Prime Minister had thought the Rwanda plan would work, he would not have announced the election without confirming a flight. He also noted that the plan only applies to 1 percent of asylum seekers and would effectively allow migrants to stay in hotels indefinitely.

Cooper has promised the Labor government’s new border security command will include 1,000 new police, MI5 intelligence officers and investigators. who will catch smugglers and join forces with police from other European countries in a new security partnership to stop boats and arrest smugglers off the French coast.

Sunak said on Monday night that the Labor government’s illegal immigration ‘amnesty’ and ‘nice deal’ with the EU would bring more illegal immigrants to the UK.

Channel crossings are more frequent in July, August and September. UK elections are being held next week. Sunak had planned to send its first flight to Rwanda on July 24. But with the Labor Party leading Sunak’s party by 20 points and with more than 12 legal challenges filed against it, that is highly unlikely.

A 43-year-old Peshmerga tribal fighter from Iraq, north of France, said he was waiting for the election to travel to the UK. He was held captive for three months and 17 days after being captured by Islamic State (IS) militants.

He said, it is better to wait for two weeks. We want to wait till the new government comes. It (Rwanda) is a really bad decision, it is politics and business. Show mercy to refugees.

A 17-year-old Syrian said he would have waited if he had the chance. He cannot decide to go. It is controlled by traffickers. It depends on them. But he thinks it is safe to wait for the new government.

An elderly Iraqi woman selling cigarettes, drinks and biscuits to raise money to cross the Channel said she had been waiting to cross the Channel for a long time.

The 24-year-old Sudanese student said he was worried because of the Rwandan plan. It would be great if the new Prime Minister canceled this plan.

A 22-year-old Iranian woman has accused the government of cruelty to refugees. He said, I have studied in Iran for six years, I can do better in UK. They are considering us with criminals and drug dealers. We don’t like Rishi Sunak.

Sarah Berry, treasurer of Roots, a charity that supports asylum seekers in northern France, said she did not think for a second that a change of government in Britain would affect refugees.

In his words, the Rwanda plan did not succeed. At least it hasn’t been implemented yet. Evidence of this is that people are still trying to reach the UK, some even dying.

Immigrants also fear that a hard-right government could win elections in France. They fear that if such a government comes to power, the number of people crossing the Channel will increase due to stricter immigration policies.

“I don’t think the change of government in Britain will affect crossing the Channel,” said Pierre Roques of The Migrants Hostel. But if a far-right government comes to power in France, more people will likely want to cross the Channel to the UK. Because then they may face bad behavior in France.
