In the heavyweight fight at Kingdom Arena, Usyk emerged victorious after scoring a points victory against Fury. It was the first defeat suffered by the Gypsy King in his career as a boxer.
After the fight, Fury controversially claimed he had done enough to win. He also accused Usyk of being given this decision only because his country (Ukraine) was at war. The Gypsy King showed his intention to turn things around, with Bob Arum revealing that Fury has exercised his rematch clause.
The fight is expected to take place at the end of the year or early next year. But Warren said that date would be finalized in about a month.
“The rematch was signed before the first fight took place, and the date will be set in the next month or so, both fighters have said they want it and we will start from there,” explained Warren, quoted from Boxingnews, Wednesday (29/5/2024).
“Even though the fighter lost, Warren emphasized that the Fury-Usyk fight is worth remembering. It was an extraordinary fight. Two absolute gladiators who left nothing behind in the ring in an epic fight in the most important fight of the 21st century. A very fight, very close and I think it will be even bigger next time,” continued Warren.
There are some question marks over the rematch. Under the IBF, Usyk must defend his title against his mandatory challenger, namely between the winner Filip Hrgoivc and Daniel Dubois. That means he will likely be dethroned if Usyk instead gets a rematch against Fury.
Usyk’s team has requested an exemption from the IBF, allowing him to retain his championship belt, in the hope that Fury’s rematch will be undisputed. If it doesn’t go to plan, then Fury’s win won’t be as big as it could have been. There are also doubts about what Fury could have done to change the outcome.
