FOSDA Epirus continues with identifying steps

THE ISSUES MANY THE SOLUTIONS FAR

The Solid Waste Management Agency of Epirus, under the new management of Nikos Georgakos, continues to tread with identifying steps and management problems of the daily operation of the Municipalities still exist, regarding the management of waste in Epirus.

This also emerges from the first meetings of the Board of Directors of the Mandatory Solid Waste Management Association of Epirus, as in today’s, during which an attempt was made to raise problems that will allow the Municipalities, especially the larger ones, such as the Municipality of Ioannito, to function better for the management of their various types of waste.

Chrysostomou for SMA

The deputy mayor for cleaning of the Municipality of Ioannina, Makis Chrysostomou, at the beginning of the meeting of the Board of Directors of FODSA, at noon on Tuesday, raised a series of issues such as the operation of the Waste Transfer Station of Ioannina during the noon and midnight hours, as well as the washing of of vehicles that delays each shift from running her job faster, the way a car wash is forced to do today. Mr. Chrysostomou asked about the working conditions of the contractor at SMA, as he said, the Municipality of Ioannito is not served by SMA during the lunch shift and is forced to take the garbage to the Eleftherochori factory.

As FODSA executive Yiannis Papagiannis answered, the operation of the SMA takes place in two shifts, however an effort will be made to reach an agreement with the contractor of the SMA in order to operate a third shift of the SMA.

As for washing the vehicles, the factory does not do it and man-hours are lost from the collection, as Mr. Chrysostomou pointed out.

The vice-president of FODSA, Tatiana Kalogianni, again requested that there be a more thorough briefing of the members of the Board of Directors by the management executives so that everyone can get to know the infrastructure of FODSA, the active contracts, the problems facing FODSA, etc.

The Mayor of Zagori Giorgos Soukouvelos raised the issue with the grasses that were cleared from the plots and no one knows what will be done with the vegetable waste. Pruning and dry grasses can be accepted by the Eleftherochori factory, however there is a declaration process to the state from the Municipalities and citizens that must be followed and it makes it difficult to directly transport this material to the factory.

Landfill operation

Finally, the items on the agenda included the operation of the Ellinikos Smelter with a proposal to extend the current contract with the contracting officer of the specific project, something that came but did not result in a decision at a previous meeting of the body, as there was uncertainty as to whether and who should to make the decision. With the opinion submitted to the Board of Directors, the decision to extend the duration of the 1st supplementary contract (option) of the “Landfill Operation of the 1st Administrative Unit (Ioannina Prefecture) Epirus Region” service, contractor K/XIAS, proceeded to Tuesday’s meeting. ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING S.A. – ELEKTOR SA, until the end of the quantities (about 28,000 tons and estimated duration until the end of December).

Until then, as mentioned by the president of FODSA, Nikos Georgakos, the tender process for the new contractor will be completed. Mr. Georgakos, however, admitted that the Elliniko landfill has received very large amounts of residue in the last period and information has been given to the company to accept quantities from Karvounari as well so that all three landfills can now work at a ratio that will not burden more the Hellinikon foundry.
