Cardiovascular, liver and nephrological diseases are the main causes of death in Nicaragua, according to the most recent report from the Ministry of Health in the Central American nation on deaths that occurred in 2023.
The heart, kidneys and liver are often the organs with the most illnesses reported among Nicaraguans, many of whom die due to heart attacks, malignant tumors, kidney failure, diabetes, hypertensive diseases, as well as liver cirrhosis.
In 2023, the leading causes of death were heart attacks, malignant tumors and chronic kidney failure.
The most common malignant tumors in 2023 were those related to the liver; breast tumors; those of the stomach, cervix, bone marrow and prostate.
Dr. Donald Moncada, from the Nicaraguan Medical Unit, says that the increase in deaths due to chronic kidney failure is striking.
«They have increased significantly compared to previous years. Another interesting fact is that the 5 leading causes of death, except for malignant tumors, are cardiovascular complications of hypertension and diabetes mellitus,” he said.
The doctor regretted that there are no efforts to promote healthy lifestyles. “Exercise, diet, smoking and good hydration are habits that help reduce mortality from these causes,” he added.
In 2019, Chronic Kidney Failure was in fourth place among the main causes of death in Nicaragua.
Deaths from pneumonia decrease
The Ministry of Health report indicates that the number of deaths due to pneumonia fell last year, moving to 12th position among causes of death, from fourth place that was recorded in 2020, during the pandemic.
Experts pointed out that the Nicaraguan government tried to hide the coronavirus pandemic, registering deaths from this cause as pneumonia, amid express burials that took place at night and under secrecy.
The government of Daniel Ortega denied these allegations, arguing that the pandemic figures were low in relation to other countries.
