Shahrukh Butt from Rawalpindi is a former hockey player who has a passion for singing. He says that he knows almost all the songs, ghazals and ballads of famous singer Mehdi Hasan.
Shah Rukh Butt smiles and says, ‘I don’t claim, but I remember Mehdi Hasan’s one, one song, ghazal and Milli song.’
He said that after matriculation, he was offered admission from many colleges in Rawalpindi, but he chose Gordon College and started playing hockey from there.
Later, when he got a job offer from Pakistan Customs, he started representing the Customs team.
According to him, he reached the national hockey team but could not get an opportunity to play at the international level.
He said that his uncles Nazir Butt and Saeed Butt used to play hockey for the Indian Railways before the formation of Pakistan.

During his working days, his office in Lahore was close to the home of renowned singer Parvez Mehdi, where he often attended music concerts.

“Since my family is also connected with art and music, this passion was natural in me,” he says.
According to Shah Rukh, his family includes many famous artists including famous singer Inayat Hussain Bhatti, singer Ali Azmat and actors Waseem Abbas and Ali Abbas.
Initially, he used to sing Kishore Kumar’s songs, but soon Mehdi Hasan’s singing charmed him.
‘When I heard Mehdi Hasan Sahib, I realized that these songs are more difficult to sing. That’s why I made him my idol.’
He still has audio cassettes of Mehdi Hasan’s songs. Shahrukh Butt says proudly, ‘These cassettes also have rare songs that are not even available on Google because they were sung only in private gatherings.’
