Former director of Coldeportes questioned the handling of sports during the Petro government

A few days have passed since the closing of the Games Summer Olympics in Paris 2024where hundreds of Colombian athletes gathered to give their best in their disciplines and compete for medals in the gold, silver and bronze categories.

Colombia won four medals at these Olympics, most of them silver. Angel Barajas in gymnastics on the horizontal bar, while Yeison Lopez and Mari Leivis Sanchez in weightlifting.

The fourth medal, also silver, was won by Renteria in combat on the last day of competition. With these results, the country is ranked 66th in the international medal table.

This topic has generated much discussion, especially in relation to the request for greater government support for athletes.

However, the Minister of Sports, Luz Cristina Lópezhas confirmed a significant reduction in the budget allocated to sport for 2025. This warning had already been raised in the Congress during the discussions on funds allocated to athletes.

It is estimated that the budget of the Ministry of Sports will decrease by approximately 848 billion pesos, going from 1.312 trillion in 2024 to 464 billion in 2025.

López explained that, so far, 460 billion pesos have been secured for operation and investment: “We are working with Congress to ensure the “resource sustainability by 2025”.
