Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı conducted inspections in the Bozdoğan district of Aydın, where a forest fire is ongoing. Making a statement to reporters at the crisis center near Örmepinar Neighborhood, Yumaklı reminded that he had mentioned 6 active fires in his previous statement, and said, “One of these, the Muğla Milas fire, has been brought under control, thank God. We currently have 5 active fires. The fire in İzmir Karşıyaka Yamanlar was squeezed into a valley with 3 planes and 14 helicopters. Transportation there is a bit difficult. In this way, we expect our friends to intervene and extinguish the pressure in this area with planes and helicopters.”
“WE DIRECTED THE HEAVY CLASS FIRE FIGHTING AIRCRAFT HERE”
Yumaklı explained that 8 planes and 14 helicopters were used to respond to the fire in the Bozdoğan district of Aydın, and said: “One of these planes is the Be-200 heavy-class firefighting plane that we brought to Turkey in recent weeks. We directed it here as well. The northern line, whose smoke we see behind us right now, is close to the village of Alhisar, which is the starting point of the fire. Unfortunately, there is a fire here that started in a rural area and spread to the forest. Although it is not certain, we think that we have unfortunately reached the current situation as a result of carelessness.”
Noting that the wind in the region was very strong yesterday and has decreased slightly today compared to yesterday, Yumaklı explained that teams are working intensively at two points on the north and south lines. Yumaklı emphasized that there are very productive forests on the south line and said, “It will be much more difficult for us there. If the wind increases very seriously, there may be vital dangers for our friends and the teams that intervene. The Güre, Hışımlar and Malküpü neighborhoods were evacuated here. Three houses in Hışımlar and two houses in Örmepınar were damaged. 10 of our personnel and 59 citizens were affected by the smoke, but there is no risk to their health.”
“EVERYONE CONTINUES THEIR HELPLESSNESS WORK”
Governor Erkan Kılıç, who came to Umurlar village to conduct investigations, received information from the authorities. Kılıç told reporters, “The fire is not fully under control at the moment, but our teams are working intensively.” Expressing that they are in a better situation compared to yesterday and the day before, Kılıç noted that all institutions, including AFAD, General Directorate of Forestry, health, gendarmerie, police and the Red Crescent, are on the field.
Stressing that everyone is continuing their selfless work, Kılıç continued as follows: “The fire has been extinguished at certain points. Precautionary interventions are continuing there. Our aim is to prevent the fire from spreading further. Our colleagues are working to intervene immediately in any fires that may break out. Our Minister had also announced yesterday that 4 people were taken into custody regarding this fire. Their procedures are currently ongoing. We assess that it started in vain. We want all our citizens to be sensitive about this issue. We all see what it costs.”
THERE ARE EVACUATIONS FROM THE FIRE ZONE
Governor Kılıç stated that they placed 490 people, including the elderly, women, children and disabled individuals, with their relatives after being reminded that evacuations were carried out as a precaution. Stating that citizens did not want to leave their homes, Kılıç said, “There are chicken coops here due to the white meat sector. We also have a large number of chickens there. Therefore, they want to take care of them, they have to take care of them. But we somehow convinced the citizens, we tried to evacuate them by removing them from the dangerous area. The citizens also showed sensitivity to us. We will follow the process regarding this. I believe that normalization will return in a short time and our citizens will return to their own homes and vineyards.”
Asked if the teams in the city had any problems with water intake areas, Kılıç said there were no problems and noted that there were over 200 large and small lakes and ponds in the city. When asked, Kılıç said that the procedures for those detained in connection with the fire were continuing and said, “The 4 people are actually the owners of the land.” Emphasizing that the teams from the Regional Forestry Directorate responded to the fire very quickly, he said, “The intervention started from the first second. Everyone made an extraordinary effort. Our wish is to never encounter such fires again. May God protect our country from all kinds of disasters.”
