Foreigners who graduate in the US should be automatically granted green cards

Former US President Donald Trump believes that foreigners who graduate from universities in the US should be automatically granted green cards to be able to stay in this country.

“You graduate from a university, I think you should automatically get a green card as part of your diploma to be able to stay in this country and that includes junior colleges,” Mr. Trump spoke on June 20 in a podcast.

A green card, also known as a permanent resident card, allows individuals to live and work permanently in the United States and is a path to citizenship.

“Anyone who graduates from a university where you study for two years or four years, if you graduate or have a doctorate from a university, you should be able to stay in this country,” Trump said.

It was unclear whether Trump was referring to all foreigners, including those who came to the US illegally or overstayed their visas, or just those on student visas.

It is also unclear whether this is a signal that if Mr. Trump is elected US president in November this year, he will change the policy as proposed above.

US lawmakers from both parties have previously proposed new legislation that would make it easier for some college graduates to stay in the country.

Mr. Trump, who has a tough stance on immigration, has repeatedly criticized President Joe Biden’s policy of preventing migrants from illegally crossing into the US at the southern border.

Experts predict that immigration will be one of the important topics in this year’s presidential election between candidates Trump and Biden.
