After the commented support of around sixty artists for the “last sacred monster of cinema”, the actress Sophie Marceau once again deplored the “vulgarity and provocation” of the man with whom she has refused to film since 1985.
An “attitude” that has been reported for more than 35 years. On Wednesday 27 December, the actress Sophie Marceau spoke out on the political-media controversy at the center of which Gérard Depardieu found himself after the transmission of images transmitted by Complément d’investigation in which he multiplies misogynistic and offensive comments towards a woman and of a little girl.
“Vulgarity and provocation have always been her profession,” commented the 57-year-old actress in the columns of Paris-Match.
In 1985, Sophie Marceau and Gérard Depardieu shared the Police manifesto. At the end of filming, the then 19-year-old actress declared publicly—and repeated it this summer in Le Monde—that she “couldn’t stand her attitude, which was rude and very inappropriate.” “Many people then turned on me by making me seem like a little nuisance,” she recalled many years later, “and after that I always turned down films with him.”
“Women speak”
This Monday, 56 personalities from the world of culture published an article in Le Figaro to denounce the “lynching” of the “last sacred monster of cinema” – targeted by three complaints of rape and sexual violence, indicted in one of the cases and accused of assault by 13 women in Mediapart investigation.
“Today we accuse him of what we praised him for”, reacted Sophie Marceau, who still does not want to “give him the pole or bury it”.
He added: “Everyone laughed with him, everyone loved him for it, everyone applauded him for who he was. And everyone thought he was normal!”
The forum aroused the indignation of numerous feminist associations and political figures, considering it for example “a spit in the face of the victims of violence” who struggle to make their voices heard.
“Now it’s the women who speak,” welcomed Sophie Marceau. “Whether you are Gérard Depardieu or Maurice Pialat, you don’t treat people like that, period.”
