For Shrove Tuesday in front of Parliament: funny pig costume with a serious background – 2024-02-12 10:39:01

“Be glad you’re not in my shoes,” says the full-column pig in front of the parliament ramp; “ÖVP refuses straw to the pigs” is written on the banner

Vienna (OTS) It is THE topic these days: will the fully slatted floor be banned in pig farming and replaced with straw or will the animals not be spared an “improved” “structured” fully slatted floor. Without a mandatory deep lying area, one cannot speak of an end to the fully slatted floor, and the ÖVP still seems a long way from that. Their officials everywhere are complaining about the shortening of the transition period, which was prescribed by the Constitutional Court anyway. But not a word is said about the new minimum standard that will replace the fully slatted floor. Is there straw bedding? Or just one more A4 page of space per pig, two pieces of wood on the chain instead of one and an expanded minimum pen size with more animals, and only half the columns in a third of the pen? This is the crucial question for animal protection, but the ÖVP does not comment on it at all.

That’s why today, on the occasion of Shrove Tuesday, the VGT reminds society, but especially the ÖVP, how much pigs suffer without straw bedding. “Funny carnival costume, but be glad you’re not really in my shoes,” says the pig in front of the steps of the parliament in Vienna. And with “ÖVP refuses straw to the pigs” on a banner, we point out those who are the only ones standing in the way of helping the suffering pigs.

VGT chairman DDr. Martin Balluch said: “The transition period must be shortened. The ÖVP will not dare to ignore the ruling of a supreme court. But with a shortened transition period, the minimum standard must also be set now, and not from 2028 as envisaged in the compromise, otherwise there will be no legal certainty. But the governing ÖVP party is silent on what this minimum standard should look like. The Green Animal Welfare Minister Rauch has decided: straw bedding. But what do Agriculture Minister Totschnig and his party think about this? We are waiting for a concrete proposal as to how the fully slatted floor will actually be abolished!”
